Species of Strawberry Plants

This publication is hosted and provided by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland.  It is part of the National Genetic Resources Program of the National Germplasm Resources Laboratory.  This resource is part of the online database maintained by the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN for short).

The material contained within this resource will be of assistance to individuals doing research on strawberry plants, looking for scientific information on strawberry species, as well as other Fragaria-specific taxonomic information.  Each of the following categories are covered in the publication:

1. A list of 103 species and subspecies of strawberry plants is presented.  Each species or subspecies is presented with a link that expands into more specific information on the individual plant.

2.  Also linked are a list of selected species with their synonymy and complete taxonomic data for selected entries.

3.  By clicking on any given strawberry species name provided in the resource, more details regarding it are presented.  The distributional range of each species is noted.  This information could be helpful for growers of native plants.

4.  Each link clicked in the online database brings more options for delving deeper into the stored strawberry species information.  Complete taxonomies are presented and list-generating tools are readily available for the serious researcher.  Other conspecific taxa are noted under each entry, and the economic importance and any common names are also noted for each.

5.  A bibliography of references is provided for further research on any taxon or strawberry species.
