Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it might as well be delicious since mornings are already hard enough. Plus, you can never go wrong with a scoop of Nutella, so why not start your day with something comforting, rich, and full of chocolatey goodness. This recipe isn’t your average french toast, so if that is what you’re expecting then be prepared to have your mind blown and your taste buds bursting with flavor.
If this recipe had a tagline it would be: rolled french toast just tastes better. It shouldn’t make sense as to why or how they taste better but eating rolled french toast is simply more satisfying. The mixture of the cinnamon rolled bread along with freshly cut strawberries and ooey gooey Nutella is the combination that you will want to start every day with.

Tips and Tricks
- The kind of bread that is used for this recipe is important because it is the star of the show. French bread, white bread, and brioche bread are the best bread options to use to soak the french toast mixture the correct way. While wheat and sprouted loaves of bread are definitely healthier and can be used, the result just won’t taste the same.
- Try using coconut sugar instead of granulated white sugar for a slightly healthier option. Coconut sugar has the same consistency as granulated sugar, it’s packed with flavor and won’t make your blood sugar spike the way white sugar does.
- If you can’t have french toast without powdered sugar on top – you have made a superb preference! But, in case there isn’t any powdered sugar in your pantry and you don’t want to run to the store, you can make powdered sugar at home. All you have to do is pour regular granulated sugar into a blender or a food processor and blend until it turns into a fine powder. That’s it — now you have powdered sugar and saved a trip to the store.
- For the bread coating, half a cup of milk is needed to water down the eggs. If you are avoiding dairy then you can swap this out for your favorite non-dairy milk alternative instead. Keep an eye out if the milk you choose has a vanilla flavoring added to it as this will change the taste of your french toast.
Nutella Strawberry Rolled French Toast
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 15 minutes
- Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 8 pieces of sliced bread
- ¼ cup (57g) butter
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (50g) icing sugar (optional)
Coating:
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup (125ml) milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Filling:
- 2 cups (250g) strawberries, sliced
- 1 cup (280g) Nutella
How to Prepare
- Start the French toast making process by washing, drying, and slicing two cups of strawberries into quarters. After all of the strawberries are sliced, set them to the side for later.
- Making the French toast coating is simple and takes less than five minutes to make. In a bowl mix two eggs, ½ cup of milk (or milk alternative), and two teaspoons of vanilla extract. Whisk the three ingredients together until the eggs have been fully incorporated and then set to the side.
- Normally, if you are making French toast you would just dip the bread in the coating and start cooking but we are doing things a little different. Since we are rolling our french toast pieces, we need to make the bread thin enough to roll. So with a rolling pin, spread out the slices of bread to become as thin as possible without ripping holes into the bread. Then, with a sharp knife, cut off the crust of the bread and discard.
- This is where that deliciously rich Nutella comes in. On every piece of bread, spread a layer of Nutella (as much or as little as desired). Retrieve those sliced strawberries and add them to one side of the bread.
- On the side of the bread where the strawberries are resting, begin to roll until it you reach the other side of the bread and you have a crepe-looking piece of bread.
- Dip the french toast roll into the egg and milk coating and place in a buttered pan on medium heat. Flip the french toast rolls as each side begins to have a golden brown color to it.
- While those french toast rolls are cooking in the pan, mix one cup of white granulated sugar and one tablespoon of cinnamon (add in more cinnamon if desired). Make sure and mix the two together evenly.
- When the french toast rolls are a golden brown color on every side, remove from heat, and roll in the cinnamon/sugar mixture. (You can be as generous as you wish to be with the cinnamon sugar coating.) Place the french toast rolls on a plate to serve and be sure to serve immediately while the Nutella is still warm and gooey in the middle. Since these french toast rolls are jam-packed with flavor and sugar you shouldn’t need to add any syrup or anything else on top of them unless you want to. While the syrup isn’t necessary due to the Nutella in the middle of the roll, you can always sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top for aesthetic and a little extra sugary delight. This recipe makes six servings but these are so delicious you may not even want to share!
Frequently Asked Questions
That depends on what kind of bread you choose to use. We recommend using brioche or white bread; if you are wanting to use gluten-free bread then this recipe will work to accommodate that. You may need to watch the French toast rolls a little more closely while cooking as gluten-free bread tends to cook faster and burn easier.
The only dairy in this recipe is easily traded out for your favorite milk alternative. Switch it for almond, oat, coconut milk, or whatever your heart desires.
While the taste is infinitely better, Nutella might not be everyone’s choice. If you fall into that category you can opt out of using Nutella. If you do, try substituting a nut butter for the Nutella instead, that way the strawberries keep from falling out of the french toast roll.
This recipe is meant to be eaten as soon as it finishes cooking. Unfortunately, this isn’t a recipe that keeps very well.
